"Max is able to destroy and dispatch people in a way that I don't think I've ever seen before. If I'm a second a lap down on a teammate, I'm thinking, 'what the hell is going on,'" Formula E driver Sam Bird tells 'Checkered Flag', a BBC podcast. "It's a second per lap and that's a staggering amount of lap time. Not only is he able to find a bit more speed when needed he does it when he wants to. The last time he lost to a teammate was when Daniel Ricciardo beat him in the standings in 2017. Should he beat Sergio Perez this season, it would be the fifth consecutive season in which he has beaten his Red Bull team-mate (Daniel Ricciardo, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Perez). And they do so by pointing towards his dominance over his teammates. There are those who place Verstappen above Hamilton. "This year is a good time to thank my father for all he has done for me since I was a little boy to get to where I am now," said the Red Bull driver, who will want to win at all costs at Zandvoort. The Dutchman will pay homage to his father, Jos Verstappen. The No.1 will debut a new design on his helmet. On top of that, the next event is his home race. Verstappen (284) is 93 points ahead of his own Red Bull teammate Perez (191). Nobody has ever been able to close a points gap this big with just eight races left to go. Moreover, it is clear that he is going to be crowned world champion again, this time without the controversy of Abu Dhabi. He has 29 and has Nigel Mansell (31) and Fernando Alonso (32) as his immediate targets. The Dutchman is eighth in the all-time rank of drivers with the most victories. Incidentally, on the subject of victories, Verstappen is on a run towards Ayrton Senna (the late three-time F1 world champion amassed 41 Grand Prix wins during his illustrious career). At the end of 1959, Bruce McLaren won at Sebring (USA) starting 10th and did so again at the start of 1960 season when he won starting 13th in Argentina. Only once before had a driver won two consecutive races after starting from tenth or worse. Only once has this precedent been set: Bruce McLaren At the Hungaroring he started from 10th position and in Spa he was 14th at the start, going on to win both races. Two historic comebacksĪnother fact that highlights the Red Bull star driver's superiority is that he has won the last two races starting from the back of the grid. Verstappen also crushed his teammate Sergio Perez who started second but finished 18 seconds behind his teammate with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz a further eight seconds behind. Verstappen started 14th and on lap 12 he was comfortably in the lead. After his drive at Spa it would be surprising if Verstappen fails to add the five more wins he needs to break that record. What's more, the reigning champion could reach and even surpass both Michael Schumacher's (in 2004) and Sebastian Vettel's (in 2013) all-time records of 13 wins in a single F1 season. He is one win away from his personal record (10 in 2021) with eight races still to go. Some even indicate that we are on the verge of an even more brutal display of dominance than the one exhibited by Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes.įirst, it is striking that the Dutchman has won nine of the 14 races held (64% success rate). There are many statistical data points that corroborate this thesis. Max Verstappen's overwhelming display at Spa has served to make it clear that he is going to win this 2022 F1 World Championship by a landslide.
